Uses of Fosinopril
Fosinopril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used for the treatment of hypertension and some types of chronic heart failure.
Precautions and Warnings
People who are allergic to any of the following should not take fosinopril.
- Monopril
- Fosinopril
- Any other medicine known as an ACE inhibitor
- Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed
Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in the specific fosinopril products they stock.
Fosinopril may cause a rare reaction called angioedema, where there is swelling under the skin. This medicine should not be used if you have had angioedema.
Fosinopril should not be taken while you are using certain other medicines and have diabetes. Before taking fosinopril, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. Fosinopril can cause death or serious harm to an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking fosinopril right away and contact your healthcare provider.
Fosinopril passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should stop breastfeeding or stop fosinopril.
Dosage
The dosage of fosinopril depends on the condition being treated and individual patient factors, such as kidney function or concurrent medications. Below are general guidelines:
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Initial Dose: 10 mg once daily for patients not taking a diuretic or 5 mg once daily for patients currently taking a diuretic (to reduce the risk of low blood pressure).
- Heart Failure: Initial Dose: 10 mg once daily.

- Hyperkalemia (High Potassium Levels)
