Uses of Hydrochlorothiazide
Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It belongs to a drug classification called Thiazide diuretics (water pill), which works by getting rid of extra salt and water through urine. Hydrochlorothiazide also alleviates fluid retention in people with liver disease, kidney problems, and heart failure.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not take Hydrochlorothiazide if you are allergic to it. Additionally, avoid using this medicine if you cannot urinate.
To ensure that Hydrochlorothiazide is safe to use, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of the following conditions:
- Liver disease
- Kidney problems
- Glaucoma
- Parathyroid gland disorder
- Diabetes
- Gout
When in treatment with Hydrochlorothiazide, avoid becoming dehydrated. Prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids.
Dosage
Hydrochlorothiazide is available in the following dosages:
- 12.5 mg
- 25 mg
- 50 mg
For the initial dose, take 25 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide orally once per day. The dosage may increase to 50 mg orally per day for maintenance treatment.
